So you’ve decided to study Chinese in Kunming — good choice. The Spring City offers mild weather, lower living costs, and an environment where daily life constantly pushes you to practice. But before you land, there are 30 phrases worth knowing. Not because you’ll pass an exam with them, but because they’ll help you survive your first week, make local friends, and feel less lost in a new country.
1. 你好 (nǐ hǎo) — Hello
2. 谢谢 (xiè xie) — Thank you
3. 对不起 (duì bu qǐ) — Sorry
4. 没关系 (méi guān xi) — It’s okay
5. 请问 (qǐng wèn) — Excuse me, may I ask…
6. 再见 (zài jiàn) — Goodbye
These six phrases alone will carry you through most polite interactions. Use “Excuse me” (请问) before asking anyone anything — it softens the question and shows respect.

Kunming is a food city. You’ll want to eat your way through it.
7. 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhè ge) — I want this one
8. 多少钱 (duō shao qián) — How much is it?
9. 好吃 (hǎo chī) — Delicious
10. 不要辣 (bú yào là) — No spicy
11. 微辣 (wēi là) — A little spicy
12. 买单 (mǎi dān) — Check, please
Walk into any crossing bridge rice noodles shop and point at what looks good. Say “I want this one” (我要这个), hand over cash or scan, and you’ve just completed your first real Chinese transaction. Try crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, steam-pot chicken, or flower cakes — and use “delicious” (好吃) liberally.

13. 洗手间在哪里 (xǐ shǒu jiān zài nǎ lǐ) — Where is the bathroom?
14. 我要去这里 (wǒ yào qù zhè lǐ) — I want to go here
15. 多少钱 (duō shao qián) — How much? (for taxis)
16. 左边 (zuǒ biān) — Left
17. 右边 (yòu biān) — Right
18. 直走 (zhí zǒu) — Go straight
Show a taxi driver your destination on your phone and say “I want to go here” (我要去这里). For buses and the metro, “left” (左边) and “right” (右边) will save you more than once.

19. 太贵了 (tài guì le) — Too expensive
20. 便宜一点 (pián yi yī diǎn) — A little cheaper
21. 可以 (kě yǐ) — Okay / Can
22. 不可以 (bù kě yǐ) — Not okay / Cannot
At Zhuanxin Market, bargaining is expected. Start with “too expensive” (太贵了), then “a little cheaper” (便宜一点). Smile while you say it.

23. 我不懂 (wǒ bù dǒng) — I don’t understand
24. 请说慢一点 (qǐng shuō màn yī diǎn) — Please speak slower
25. 这个怎么说 (zhè ge zěn me shuō) — How do you say this?
26. 我需要帮忙 (wǒ xū yào bāng máng) — I need help
27. 我生病了 (wǒ shēng bìng le) — I’m sick

29. 救命 (jiù mìng) — Help!
30. 我是外国人 (wǒ shì wài guó rén) — I’m a foreigner
Phrases 23 to 26 are the ones you’ll use most as a beginner.”Please speak slower” (请说慢一点) and “How do you say this?” (这个怎么说) turn every conversation into a mini-lesson. Use them often — locals in Kunming are patient and usually happy to help.

Knowing these phrases is one thing. Using them daily is another. That’s where Kunming has a real advantage. Learning Chinese in Kunming means your classroom extends into the street — ordering at a noodle shop, asking for directions to Green Lake, chatting with a vendor at the market. The city’s relaxed pace makes it easier to speak without fear of judgment.
Many learners also find that small group Chinese courses in Kunming help accelerate this process. With only a few classmates, you get plenty of speaking time and real-time correction, which builds confidence fast. If you’re the type who learns by doing, studying Chinese in Kunming through a small group format gives you both structure and daily practice.

These phrases are a start, not a destination. Once you’ve settled in, the next step is structured learning. That’s when small group Chinese lessons in Kunming become valuable — they turn scattered phrases into real grammar and conversation skills. You’ll also find that learning Chinese in Kunming gets easier the more you use the language outside class.
Pair your study with exploration. Visit Yunnan University’s campus, walk around Dianchi Lake, take a weekend trip to Dali or Lijiang. Each experience adds vocabulary and cultural context no textbook can offer.
You don’t need perfect Chinese to start your life in Kunming. You need about 30 phrases, a willingness to make mistakes, and a city that supports daily practice. Studying Chinese in Kunming gives you all three — the phrases get you started, and the environment does the rest.
So learn these, book your course, and get ready to speak. The Spring City is waiting.
