Three Reasons
to Learn Chinese in Nanjing

Direct Access to China’s Literary Heritage
As the first city in China to be named a UNESCO "City of Literature," Nanjing is the ideal place to study the intersection of language and history. Sojourn Abroad programs in Nanjing often include visits to the Presidential Palace and the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, allowing you to study Mandarin through the lens of the city's 2,500-year-old history. This deep cultural context helps students master classical idioms and high-level vocabulary that are essential for true linguistic sophistication.
The Authentic "Mid-Size" City Advantage
While Nanjing is a major metropolis, it offers a more manageable and "local" feel than Shanghai or Beijing. With fewer international tourists, you are pushed into authentic daily interactions that require consistent Mandarin use. Sojourn Abroad emphasizes this immersion by helping students navigate the city’s famous culinary scene, like the Qinhuai River food stalls. This "lower-pressure" urban environment allows you to build confidence quickly through genuine connections with the city’s exceptionally welcoming and educated residents.
A Living "Garden City" for Natural Immersion
Nanjing is celebrated as one of China’s greenest cities, seamlessly integrating mountains, lakes, and forests into its urban center. Sojourn Abroad programs utilize this landscape to offer "mobile classrooms"—lessons held while walking the 600-year-old Ming City Wall or along the shores of Xuanwu Lake. This lush allows you to practice Mandarin in tranquil teahouses and parks. It’s the perfect setting for those who want to learn at a more mindful, contemplative pace while surrounded by nature.

Reviews

This program is extremely affordable compared to many other language programs, especially considering everything it offers. The prices make long-term study in China realistic, without sacrificing quality. What I love most is the flexibility to study in different cities. I was able to live one month in each location and experience two amazing cities, Beijing and Shanghai. Each city offers a completely different lifestyle and learning environment, which keeps the experience fresh and motivating. Few programs give you this many choices of cities while remaining so budget-friendly.
