Three Reasons
to Learn Chinese in Shanghai

Gateway to the Global Business World
Shanghai is the undisputed commercial and financial capital of mainland China. By studying here, you are in the perfect spot to learn Business Mandarin in its natural habitat. It’s the best place to bridge the gap between classroom learning and a high-level international career. You’ll learn the specific etiquette and vocabulary needed for the boardroom while being surrounded by the city's global energy. It’s not just about learning words; it’s about learning how to "talk business" in the world’s most dynamic financial hub.
A Comfortable "Soft Landing"
For those intimidated by a total "culture shock," Shanghai offers a more accessible transition. It is highly internationalized, meaning you can find familiar comforts—like international hospitals, diverse cuisine, and English-friendly services—while you build your confidence in Chinese. This "East-meets-West" balance allows you to focus on your studies without being overwhelmed by daily logistics, making it an ideal choice for first-time visitors to China.
Exposure to Modern "Lifestyle" Chinese
While cities like Beijing focus on traditional history, Shanghai is the heart of modern Chinese pop culture, fashion, and tech. Learning here exposes you to the slang and social etiquette used by young professionals and urbanites. From navigating the world’s largest metro system to using the latest lifestyle apps in a tech-savvy environment, you will master the practical, fast-paced Mandarin that defines the future of China's urban life.

What's the weather in Shanghai like?
Shanghai features a subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons:
- Spring (March–May): Fresh and breezy with blooming cherry blossoms, though occasional rain showers are common.
- Summer (June–August): Hot and humid, with temperatures frequently exceeding 32°C (90°F). This period includes the “Plum Rain” season in June and July.
- Autumn (September–November): Considered the most comfortable time to visit, featuring crisp air and clear skies.
- Winter (December–February): Cold and damp. While it rarely snows, the high humidity often makes the cold feel more “biting” than the temperature suggests.
What are the famous cuisines in Shanghai?
- Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumplings): These delicate, steamed dumplings feature a thin skin that holds a rich pork or crab filling and a burst of savory hot broth.
- Shengjianbao (Pan-Fried Pork Buns): A popular breakfast staple, these buns are pan-fried to a golden crisp on the bottom while remaining soft and juicy on the inside.
- Hong Shao Rou (Red-Braised Pork Belly): This classic comfort dish consists of succulent pork belly cubes slow-braised in soy sauce and sugar until they reach a melt-in-your-mouth, glossy finish.
- Hairy Crab (Da Zha Xie): A seasonal autumn delicacy, these freshwater crabs are typically steamed and prized for their rich, buttery roe and sweet meat.
- Cong You Ban Mian (Scallion Oil Noodles): A minimalist but highly flavorful dish of wheat noodles tossed in oil infused with fried scallions and seasoned with dark soy sauce.
- Shanghai Smoked Fish (Xun Yu): Despite the name, this dish features deep-fried fish pieces soaked in a sweet-savory glaze rather than being smoked.
- Pork Ribs with Rice Cakes (Paigu Niangao): This hearty meal pairs tender, braised pork ribs with chewy, soft glutinous rice cakes that soak up the savory sauce.
- Yan Du Xian: A traditional soup that combines fresh and cured pork with tender spring bamboo shoots in a rich, milky-white broth.
- Ci Fan Tuan (Sticky Rice Rolls): A quintessential breakfast item made of glutinous rice wrapped around savory fillings like fried dough sticks, pork floss, and pickled vegetables.
- Lion’s Head Meatballs (Shizi Tou): Large, tender pork meatballs stewed with napa cabbage, named for their resemblance to a lion’s mane.
What are must-see attractions in Shanghai?
- The Bund: This historic waterfront promenade showcases a captivating blend of colonial-era buildings and stunning views of the modern Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River.
- Yu Garden: A magnificent classical Chinese garden known for its intricate rockeries, tranquil ponds, and ornate pavilions.
- Shanghai Museum: Located in People’s Square, this world-class museum is renowned for its extensive collection of ancient Chinese art and artifacts, including bronzes, ceramics, and calligraphy.
- Jing’an Temple: An active, historic Buddhist temple amidst the modern cityscape, offering a tranquil escape from the urban hustle.
- Former French Concession: This charming area is known for its tree-lined avenues, historic architecture, and a variety of boutiques, cafes, and art galleries.

- Shanghai Tower: The tallest building in China, its observation deck on the 118th floor offers unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views of the city.
- Oriental Pearl Tower: This iconic, futuristic television tower is a symbol of the Shanghai skyline and offers multiple observation decks.
- Nanjing Road: One of the world’s busiest shopping streets, bustling with both modern malls and traditional shops.

SA program is perfect for retired people who want a more refined and meaningful experience in China. It feels very elegant and flexible, allowing you to choose to live in each city for a period of time instead of rushing from place to place. Staying longer in each city gives you the chance to truly understand the local culture, daily life, and rhythm of the city. You can enjoy learning at a comfortable pace while exploring different cities in depth. It is a wonderful combination of education, travel, and lifestyle, especially suited for retirees.
David, USA

Sojourn Abroad program is especially appealing for retired people who want a refined lifestyle without high costs. With just a modest budget, you can live comfortably in each city for a period of time and enjoy a high quality of life. I studied with Sojourn Abroad in Qingdao, Xiamen, and Sanya, and the experience was consistently excellent. SA provides the same high standard of service in every city, making each stay smooth and enjoyable. Being able to settle in different cities, learn, and truly enjoy daily life made this program both elegant and deeply satisfying.
Liam, USA

This program is extremely affordable compared to many other language programs, especially considering everything it offers. The prices make long-term study in China realistic, without sacrificing quality. What I love most is the flexibility to study in different cities. I was able to live one month in each location and experience two amazing cities, Beijing and Shanghai. Each city offers a completely different lifestyle and learning environment, which keeps the experience fresh and motivating. Few programs give you this many choices of cities while remaining so budget-friendly.
Louis, France

This program is incredibly affordable and offers amazing value for the price. The tuition is surprisingly low compared to other language programs, yet the quality of teaching and support is very high. Because it is so cheap, it makes long-term study possible without financial pressure. You can focus on learning and living comfortably instead of worrying about costs. For anyone who wants a serious language program that is truly budget-friendly, this is one of the most affordable options available.
