Back

I Came for a Week. I Stayed for 121 Days. Here‘s Why.

08/31/2026

I booked my trip to Kunming for one week.

I’d heard about the “Spring City” — mild weather, fresh air, a relaxed vibe. I was curious, but I wasn’t planning to stay. A week to see the sights, eat some noodles, and head back.

That was 121 days ago.

I’m still here.

The Week That Wasn’t Enough

I came to Kunming to learn Chinese. Self-study had taken me as far as it could. I knew I needed immersion — real conversations, real mistakes, real progress.

So I booked a one-week course with Sojourn Abroad to test the waters. Class sizes are capped at ten — often just five or six — so you can’t hide. You have to speak, make mistakes, get corrected, and try again.

By the end of the first week, I could order noodles without pointing at the menu. I could have a five-minute conversation with my homestay host about my day. Not fluency. But progress — something I hadn’t felt in months.

Why I Stayed

One week turned into two. Then another. Then another.

Kunming’s climate is hard to describe until you experience it — year-round temperatures around 15°C to 20°C. No sweltering summers, no freezing winters. Just comfortable days that make you want to be outside, studying in a park or chatting with a vendor at the market.

And the people. Unlike Beijing or Shanghai, Kunming moves slowly. People have time to talk. They don’t switch to English the moment they hear your accent. They listen, correct you gently, and keep the conversation going.

I was learning outside the classroom as much as inside. Buying vegetables became a vocabulary lesson. Ordering coffee became tone practice. Dinner with my homestay host became a daily conversation drill.

The Program That Made It Possible

Sojourn Abroad gave me the structure to turn Kunming into a real learning environment.

  • You can start any Monday of the year. No waiting for semesters. No rigid academic calendars. I arrived on a Tuesday, and by the following Monday I was in class. You can stay for two weeks or up to a full year. I started with one week and kept extending — because the program let me.
  • Classes are small — never more than ten students, often five or six. Fifteen classes per week, Monday through Friday. That’s three focused hours of instruction every day, plus hours of real-world practice outside. The math adds up fast: 15 classroom hours plus real-world practice every week.
  • The cost is transparent: $230 USD per week, all-inclusive. No hidden fees. No surprise markups. And the school handles the things that usually overwhelm first-time students — visa support, finding accommodation, settling into a new city.
  • I chose a homestay, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. Three meals a day with a local family. Conversations at the dinner table. Natural, unscripted Chinese that no textbook could replicate. The homestay option runs about $350 per week, including meals. Every meal became a lesson.

121 Days Later

I didn’t plan to stay this long.

But somewhere between the morning markets and afternoon classes, between homestay dinners and weekend trips, Kunming stopped feeling like a place I was visiting and started feeling like home.

My Chinese isn’t perfect. I still mix up tones. I still forget characters. But I can hold a conversation now. I can navigate the city without a translation app. I can laugh at my mistakes instead of cringing at them.

That’s what 121 days gave me. Not just language — but the confidence to use it.

Why You Should Come — and Stay

If you’re thinking about learning Chinese in China, don’t assume it has to be Beijing or Shanghai. Those cities have high costs, brutal winters, and a pace that wears you down.

Kunming is different. Mild weather year-round. A relaxed pace. Locals who speak clearly and have time to talk. And programs like Sojourn Abroad give you the structure to turn that environment into real progress — small classes, flexible scheduling, full support from visa to accommodation.

I came for one week. I stayed for 121 days. And I’m still not sure when I’ll leave.

Maybe you’ll have the same problem.

Ready to turn your short trip into something more? Come for the language. Stay for the life.

We will get back to you within 1 working day!

Thank you so much for contacting Sojourn Abroad! We can’t wait to welcome you in China!
